The Horror Genre page features sections of Iconic Horror Movies, Semiotics, Sub-Genre's, Theories and our groups transition work that was completed during the Summer holidays.
Iconic Horror movies:
As an introduction to our Horror genre, here are a variety of iconic movies, each sub-genre is set in order from oldest to newest. Each Horror movie contains the release date, name of director and some notes/facts about the movie.
Horror Semiotics
The Semiotics is the study of signs to represent the common features in a horror movie. A sign could be anything that carries meaning from explicit icons to implicate symbols and signs.
Horror Sub-Genres
Each sub-genre has different characteristics and areas represented within their iconic movies. For example: the protagonists may be portrayed differently within each sub-genre to make them unique and memorable.
Horror Theories
There're theories that illustrate the key elements within a horror movie that are important to the concept.
Trailer Content Analysis
During our transition period, we each had to do a content analysis from four horror teaser trailers. We had to analyse different camera, sound and editing techniques used within the teaser. We also had to get the number of shots from the aggressor and victim, locations and type of graphic content.
Treatments
We each made our own treatment for our horror film during the transition period. We had to come up with a title, tag-line, sub-genre, target audience, character names, synopsis and inferred meaning of the film. We also come up with the narrative within Todorov's theory where we state the equilibrium, disequilibrium and resolution to represent how the film will be set.
Storyboards
The next step with our treatment is to record our ideas on a storyboard for a film trailer. The storyboards are set in chronological order of how the trailer is viewed. Also for this task, we would have to go into detail in terms of what props to use, what types of camera angles are shot and what's about to happen in the shot.
Film Crits
There're film crits in our transistions that we had to fill out by watching actual classic horror movies where we had to look out for who was the antagonist, protagonist, stock characters, icons, and background and decor; all of which feature Graeme Buron's Theory. We also had to fill out Todorov's theory; discussing the equilibrium disequilibrium and resolution. And finally the film review about how popular it was.
